COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Humane Society confirmed that the dog in a video of alleged mistreatment was safe, easing local worries. Officials did not provide further details on the animal’s condition.  KTVN
  • Last year, state agencies received nearly 41,000 child protective services referrals with 30,484 in Clark County and 6,478 in Washoe. Local providers explain that a referral does not mean child removal — many reports come from schools, law enforcement, and hospitals amid ongoing efforts to help families facing housing challenges.  Reno Gazette-Journal
  • The TMFR fire engine parade and toy drive will visit local neighborhoods through December 15 (offering festive holiday spirit and donation opportunities for residents).  KTVN

  • Construction in Oddie District continues as the district was recognized on Thursday, Dec. 11 for its innovative maker space & art park that supports local creative talent in the community.  KTVN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Washoe County School District halted tater tot service in 18 elementary schools after a student sustained a minor cut from glass-like material on Tuesday, Nov. 25. The district and distributor McCain Foods launched a full recall and notified the FDA and Northern Nevada Public Health.  News4
  • The Washoe County School District announced graduation ceremonies for 2026 will occur from June 2 to June 15, including Sparks High hosting its event at Lawlor Events Center on Thursday, June 11. Students + families should check local announcements for details.  Reno Gazette-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Dec. 11, the Regional Transportation Commission collected nonperishable food donations at Sam’s Club on Kietzke Lane — a local effort to support residents during the holiday drive.  KTVN
  • Residents can attend a public meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Red Hawk Golf Resort Events Center to hear RTC findings on a potential new roadway connecting Sparks, Spanish Springs, and the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center — an effort to ease congestion on I-80.  News4

  • Firefighters warn Sparks residents to take extra care while decorating during the holiday season as unattended candles, cooking, and misused lights can spark fires. John Beck of the Reno Fire Department advises using LED lights plus observing proper precautions indoors and outdoors.  KTVN
