COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local groups in northern Nevada rallied for Giving Tuesday to boost services and support local families. The May Arboretum Society at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park and NMTS in Reno each aimed to raise $10,000—funds to upgrade park features and expand music therapy programs.  News4
  • Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement celebrated the Tuesday after Thanksgiving that sees local groups engaging the public to support those in need— the Nevada Humane Society offers donation matches for pet care while the Food Bank and PBS Reno promote special efforts to fight child hunger. Community members can also bring nonmonetary donations, including pet food, during extended hours at local shelters.  KTVN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washoe County leaders held a four-hour Community Homelessness Advisory Board meeting Tuesday where county commissioners and local council members heard from groups in Sparks, Reno, and Catholic Charities—Marie Baxter and Ryan Gustafson explained that rising rents and pandemic aftershocks have pushed more people toward homelessness while local counts have dropped. No new actions were approved at the meeting.  News4
  • RTC will shift lanes on Mill Street as part of its ongoing project to improve traffic flow—drivers might see delays as the work takes effect soon—so they are advised to plan ahead.  KTVN
  • Washoe County held a Community Homelessness Advisory Board meeting where local agencies from Reno, Sparks and other areas reported that shelters helped many people leave the streets but were nearly full — and the City of Reno spent millions on rental assistance to boost affordable housing. Officials stressed that the meeting focused on ongoing efforts to manage homelessness and improve housing stability.  KTVN
  • The Truckee River flood mitigation project—located near Vista Boulevard—is now in its final design phase and plans to widen the river channel and build three terraces to lower flood risks in the Reno-Sparks area. Construction is expected to begin in 2027 or 2028 using funds from a local flood control tax.  News4
  • The Nevada Department of Transportation said rumors of tearing down and rebuilding a bridge as part of U.S. 395 improvements in the North Valleys are false—construction crews removed temporary falsework that was never meant to stay while permanent bridge parts remain intact. The project stays on schedule and will be completed by next summer as work continues to improve traffic mobility for about 82,000 daily travelers.  KTVN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lyme disease cases remain rare in northern Nevada but increased by nearly 38% in Washoe County, rising from eight to 11 cases in 2024. Public health officials noted that most cases involved recent travel and urged residents to take precautions to avoid tick bites.  Reno Gazette-Journal

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Kirkwood ski resort will open on Friday — December 5th and Northstar will open on Saturday — December 6th, offering locals a fresh start to the winter season.  KTVN
