COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nugget Casino and Catholic Charities are teaming up to host a Thanksgiving dinner on November 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.—local community members are invited to attend the event.  KTVN
  • Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada now offers free baby formula at its pantry locations in Reno and Sun Valley for families in need—parents must show a birth certificate or have their child with them for verification. The nonprofit announced Thursday that generous donations have provided several major formula brands to support those facing financial hardships.  News4
  • The Reno Sparks Indian Colony Craft Fair is set to run today and Saturday. The fair will offer local craft and cultural activities — additional details are pending.  KTVN
  • During a Diwaliwood fundraiser last month, community members raised $30,000 for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada.  KTVN
  • A giving machine has returned in Sparks that will let participants buy essential items—diapers, pet care and a week of meals for a family. The service offers a new way for residents to get help with daily necessities.  KTVN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On November 11, JoDee Woodard from Lovelock filmed a rare hyperlapse of the northern lights lighting up the sky over northern Nevada—Paul McFarlane of the Fleishmann Planetarium said high solar activity makes the display visible from up to 1,000 km away.  Reno Gazette-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After the federal shutdown ended, Reno-Tahoe International Airport has begun preparing for a busy Thanksgiving travel period as the FAA froze flight reduction directives to keep flight cancellations and delays stable— the airport also partnered with The Children’s Cabinet to deliver essential items to federal workers who worked without pay during the shutdown.  KTVN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Step 2 received a grant from Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation to help mothers in recovery and expand its support services locally—funding that may boost access to essential care.  KTVN
