COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Children's Cabinet launched its annual Adopt a Family program to help families facing financial challenges receive holiday gifts—donors can shop, wrap, and drop off gifts or donate items by December 15.  KTVN
  • Communities in Schools of Western Nevada and Great Basin Federal Credit Union are asking for donations for this year's Angel Tree program — the drive will help families get needed gifts during the holiday season.  KTVN
  • As the weather cools off, local warming stations have been set up in the area to provide shelter and heat for people in need—officials say these centers will help those facing cold temperatures.  KTVN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Washoe County School District discussed plans to modernize Libby Booth Elementary School for the 2027-28 school year and rezone students by closing Veterans Memorial and Roger Corbett schools. Community members voiced concern over closing the historic Veterans Memorial school on Locust Street—further details will be discussed at the school board meeting Tuesday.  News4

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Nevada Extension offices now loan free electronic radon monitors that show home radon levels in about 10 minutes — nearly 26% of homes have registered levels at or above the EPA limit. People with high readings are advised to confirm the results with a mail-in kit available at low cost.  KTVN
  • A powerful solar flare triggered an electromagnetic storm that brought the Northern Lights to northern Nevada Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.  KTVN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Nevada Wildlife Commission voted Saturday, Nov. 8, to legitimize coyote killing contests—participants must have a Nevada hunting or trapping permit and can compete from Sept. 1 to March 31—and the decision has sparked controversy among wildlife advocates and local officials.  Reno Gazette-Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Northern Nevada Public Health announced that free flu shots will be available Saturday — a service designed to help protect community health in the region.  KTVN
  • Renown's Crisis Care Center in Sparks reopened with state funds from the 988 crisis response fee to offer 24/7 mental health care—this center now serves up to 25 patients for short-term stays after closing in April when federal funds ended. Dr. Takesha Cooper said the center welcomed eight patients on Tuesday and ten before noon Wednesday.  FOX Reno
