EDUCATION NEWS

  • A local organization in Sparks is launching an initiative to help readers detect false information when consuming news — the program will teach community members how to tell facts from fiction.  KTVN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A REMSA employee won a national award—one of about 150 EMS professionals recognized across the country, marking a significant national honor for the team.  KTVN
  • This weekend, the Nevada Department of Transportation will partially close the State Route 439 and Electric Avenue intersection for USA Parkway repairs — a move to repave aging asphalt. Work is planned during off-peak hours to help reduce traffic in the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center.  KTVN
  • The USDA and Food and Nutrition Service warn that SNAP benefits may not cover November if the government shutdown continues, as funding will only last until next Thursday, October 30. The Nevada Department of Human Services said they will keep accepting applications & track the program's impact if federal funding falls short.  KTVN
  • Yesterday, the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new Ground Transportation Center at the airport that will bring rental cars, taxis, ride shares, and shuttles together. The $299-million project will reduce traffic, free nearly 600 parking spaces, and create several hundred local jobs, with its first floor set to open in two years — funded by a public and private partnership.  KTVN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada is asking for safe, unopened baby formula donations as families face possible cuts in WIC benefits amid uncertainty over federal funding. Donations can be dropped off daily between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. at centers including St. Vincent’s Thrift Store—offering a vital way to help infants get the nutrients they need.  KTVN

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Wednesday night at Hug High, the Hug Hawks defeated the McQueen Lancers 2-0 during Senior Night—marking their second win over the rivals. The win tied them with Sparks for first in Division 5A—playoff seeding will come down to stat tiebreakers as the team carries its 17-1 record into the postseason tournament.  KTVN
