BUSINESS NEWS

  • A manufacturer that supplies Ford, GM and Tesla has delayed the closure of its Reno facility from Oct. 7 to Nov. 14—retaining 63 out of 154 workers after laying off 91—to meet a client's limited demand and has notified local officials.  Reno Gazette-Journal
  • Post Consumer Brands has filed notice for mass layoffs at its Sparks cereal plant, with nearly 120 workers scheduled to be laid off in waves from December to March — a move following an earlier announcement to close the 50-year-old facility due to declining cereal sales.  Reno Gazette-Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Starting today, the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts will use enhanced screening protocols at every event—these measures include walkthrough metal detectors, a secondary screening for those with medical or accessibility needs, and a bag size limit of 12 by 16 to boost attendee safety. Attendees are advised to plan extra time for entry.  KTVN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Grand Sierra Resort donated $15,000 to Robert Mitchell Elementary—part of its GSR Cares program that supports local education.  KTVN
  • Education Alliance of Washoe County reported on October 20 that local school attendance rose to 71% (helping address chronic absenteeism nationwide) due to its focused efforts.  KTVN
  • A workforce program trained local residents facing employment barriers in tree care, urban forestry— and biodiversity restoration on Oct 20 to build essential skills for local landscape projects.  KTVN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Scott's Lawn Care owner Scott Gist advises residents to quickly clear fallen leaves and pine needles to prevent mold, pests, and fire hazards—he adds that piling or mulching debris away from homes protects roofs and gutters.  KTVN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Night work is underway at Veterans Parkway and Geiger Grade Road roundabout — contractors expect the work to be completed by Wednesday.  KTVN
  • Secretary of War Pete Hegseth visited Naval Air Station Fallon and joined Gen. Dan Caine in an F-16 flight on October 13 to honor the Navy’s 250th birthday—he posted a video that sparked excitement among service members and fans in the region.  News4

HEALTH NEWS

  • Northern Nevada Public Health is offering COVID vaccines for everyone six months and older, and residents can visit local clinics for vaccine appointments.  KTVN
