COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Food Bank of Northern Nevada will host Baggin’ for Apples on October 30 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at its Sparks warehouse where families can pack produce and enjoy festive Halloween activities—advance registration is required.  KTVN

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local music fans in Sparks will see touring grindcore bands Genestealer and Civilian Thrower perform at Pizzava, 670 E. Prater Way, at 7 p.m. on Oct. 15—there is a $7 door fee for entry.  Reno Gazette-Journal
  • The World Gay Rodeo Finals will be held this weekend at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center as the invite-only event marks its 50th iteration with traditional rodeo competitions and memorabilia on display—highlighting decades of change. The International Gay Rodeo Association organized the championship and hopes the event will spark enough local interest to establish a regular rodeo in the area.  News4

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sage Ridge School announced it will begin accepting first and second grade students in fall next year—expanding its grade range for the upcoming school year.  KTVN
  • Washoe County School District is accepting School of Choice applications until October 24th. Families may choose up to three school preferences for their children, and the district will decide placements based on enrollment capacity and staffing—I updates are available through Avela accounts.  KTVN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Snow continues to fall over Donner Summit and Tahoe passes today as slick roads and chain rules on state highways cause travel delays and hazardous conditions. Rain showers in Reno-Sparks will persist through the morning—drivers should plan extra time for their commutes.  Reno Gazette-Journal
  • The Reno-Sparks Indian Colony donated $10,000 to One Truckee River to protect and restore the Truckee River—an important traditional cultural resource that benefits local water use and recreation. The gift supports ongoing efforts to improve water quality and educate the public about the river’s ecosystem.  KTVN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • NDOT will reduce lanes on I-580 from October 14 through October 17 daily from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. between Mt. Rose Highway and old U.S. 395A exit 16 for maintenance on the bridge anti-icing system—critical for winter preparation.  KTVN
  • The Nevada Department of Transportation approved the state's EV Infrastructure Deployment Plan in September and secured $38m in federal funds to expand fast-charging stations—though those funds are not yet available. Analysis shows that Nevadans save money when charging at home compared with fueling gas vehicles, and EV charging contracts are expected to be released within the next year.  Reno Gazette-Journal
  • As temperatures fall, experts and highway patrol urge residents to check tire treads, lights, and windshield wipers and to keep an emergency bag — with food, water, and tools — as storms roll in and NDOT warns that unprepared cars on mountain roads may slow road clearing.  KTVN

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • NV reached a settlement with RealPage—its first state deal—that limits the company’s use of private data in setting rent, with RealPage paying $200,000 for tenant relief and critics saying the deal may slow price-fixing tactics nationwide.  Reno Gazette-Journal
