  • The Food Bank of Northern Nevada started its fall Kids Cafe — it gives free meals to children from families in need. The event began Oct 6 and will run through the fall to support local families.  KTVN
  • Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue urges Sparks residents to follow safety tips during National Fire Prevention Week from October 5th through the 11th as part of the Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home campaign. Fire officials advise keeping lithium-ion batteries away from combustible items and charging them only as directed by the manufacturer—measures that help reduce fire risks.  KTVN

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Trader Joe’s will release its Trick-or-Treat Mini Canvas Tote Bags tomorrow for $2.99 with four themed colors—customers can buy up to four bags per person as each store gets 250 cases that may sell out quickly.  Reno Gazette-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nevada 4-H clubs launched a new series of hands-on programs that include wild horse observation, robotics, self-defense, and pizza making—designed to grow skills among youth across the state. A kickoff event is scheduled for Oct 23 in Reno where youth and families will meet club leaders and sign up for activities.  KTVN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue is launching Green Waste Collection Days over the next three weekends to help Washoe County residents safely dispose of dry and dead vegetation—TMFR will operate from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at locations such as Washoe Valley, Silver Lake and Spanish Springs.  News4

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Work on the roundabout at Legends was completed — the improvements aim to make travel easier and safer for drivers and pedestrians.  KTVN
  • City of Sparks and RTC finished upgrading the roundabout at the Outlets at Legends—drivers say clear lane markings and extra signs boost traffic flow and safety. Reflective hybrid beacons will be added in the coming months to further improve pedestrian crossings.  KTVN
  • City of Sparks finished work on the Outlets at Legends roundabout after months of construction that cost $3M. Local drivers said the clear lane markings and better signs help with smoother navigation—plans to add pedestrian beacons will improve safety soon.  KTVN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nevada Health Link enrollees will face a 26% premium increase next year due to rising medical costs—factors that also include higher prescription spending and the loss of enhanced federal subsidies. About 110,000 locals can compare plans during open enrollment starting Nov. 1 for coverage beginning Jan. 1.  Reno Gazette-Journal
