COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Kids Cafe will be open from October 6 through 10 during fall break—families can plan to use the space while children enjoy the program. KTVN
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Washoe County School District will face a large deficit for fiscal year 27 due to funding challenges as Carson City and Churchill County also expect financial shortfalls—while Lyon and Storey counties remain stable and Douglas County will share more details soon. KTVN
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ At its recent meeting, the Washoe County Library Board declined to approve any of the three staffing models that would have reduced service hours at several partnership branches, including Verdi Community Library. The board will review revised figures and propose a new option at a meeting on Oct.15—after residents voiced strong support to keep current operations intact. News4
- ➤ The City of Sparks began cleanup of the eastern Sparks Marina canal and stormwater vaults today by contracting Gerhardt—Berry Construction; work will finish by Friday, October 3, and residents are advised to steer clear of the active sites. KTVN
- ➤ Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo issued a statement on the government shutdown on Oct 1—his office examined potential impacts on state services. The release shows that the administration is assessing how the shutdown may affect state operations. KTVN
- ➤ Yesterday, the Truckee Meadows Water Authority started the new water year by reviewing local water projections—and gathering community input to plan future steps. Their analysis will guide water management actions in the coming months. KTVN
- ➤ The Nevada Medicaid Managed Care Program began open enrollment this week as Medicaid members received letters to choose new health plans for 70,000 rural and 700,000 urban residents. The new plans, including CareSource and SilverSummit for rural areas and other options for urban members, will start coverage on January 1—members will keep using their current providers during the transition. - ➤ The Reno Housing Authority has reopened John McGraw and Silver Sage Courts in Sparks after major renovations that updated interiors, roofs and systems. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held this week to celebrate the affordable housing upgrades — keeping these properties sustainable for local families. KTVN
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Eligible residents can begin enrolling in the Medicaid Managed Care Program starting Wednesday + applications open that day for those who qualify. KTVN
LIFESTYLE NEWS
- ➤ Costumed dogs will be the main attraction for a Halloween fundraiser at Piñon Bottle South on Saturday, October 26 from 3 to 5 p.m.—the event features a costume contest, themed photo booth, DJ, silent auction, specialty cocktails and treats to support Shakespeare Animal Fund. Entry for each dog costs $10. KTVN
