- ➤ Bridget Posson, executive director of the American Red Cross Northern Nevada, said residents should prepare an emergency to-go bag with essentials such as a gallon of water per person, nonperishable foods, a flashlight, and 72 hours of medications to be ready for disasters like fires, flooding, and earthquakes using a team of 225 volunteers to advise on safety. The organization works to help neighbors stay prepared in Northern Nevada. FOX Reno

- ➤ Land Ocean will open its new restaurant in Sparks in February — the location is expected to offer fresh dining options for local residents. KTVN
- ➤ Marcolino's Italia is moving to Midtown—taking over the former location of Rapscallion—and will serve Sparks locals at its new space—using the well-known site once home to the popular restaurant. KTVN
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Winners of the Respect the Cone art contest were announced after students submitted original artwork showing the importance of work zone safety—contest organizers noted that the creative entries will encourage safer work zones in Sparks. KTVN

- ➤ Governor Lombardo has named Dr. Victor Wakefield as Nevada's new Superintendent of Public Instruction, and he will begin the job on Oct. 27—his long work as a teacher and leader helped him earn the role. News4
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Sparks Boulevard at Howard Drive is closed today for underground utility work—its closure will last for two weeks. KTVN
- ➤ The Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) said the East Lincoln Way Roundabout Project near Outlets at Legends is nearing completion (final work will finish soon) so the project will open shortly. KTVN
- ➤ The debate over the Truckee River flood project is heating up as Sparks Mayor Ed Lawson said he supports flat fields but is worried a recreation complex might delay the flood protection work. The Truckee River Flood Management Authority board will decide on Oct. 10 between a nature park option estimated at $15 to $17 million and a recreation option with 11 flat fields costing $26 to $29 million—raising concerns about budget and safety. - ➤ A jury awarded $510 million to Saint Mary's Health Network in a lawsuit on September 29 after finding Universal Health Services and other defendants liable for fraud—malice and a coordinated scheme during the pandemic. KTVN
