COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, Andelin Family Farm holds its grand opening for its fall festival — a new event for local families in the area.  KTVN
  • Today, Andelin Family Farm hosts its Fall Festival with new features like Buster's Barnyard Challenge, an accessible farm store, a you-pick pumpkin field, an expanded slide mountain, and baby zip lines — designed to give local families a fun day outdoors. A private kickoff event for Autism Coalition of Nevada visitors was held Tuesday night as more than 300 employees help run the festival.  KTVN
  • The lanes at Coconut Bowl in Sparks will host the 11th annual Pirates Pins and Pints fundraiser on Sunday, October 26 from noon to 3 p.m.—where teams in costumes will bowl, win prizes, and raise funds for programs supporting low-income seniors and children. Seniors in Service will use the proceeds to fund Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion Programs—ensuring that those in need receive ongoing support.  KTVN

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Sparks residents urged NDOT to add a center divide on Pyramid Highway after a fatal crash near Disc Drive killed two locals earlier this month—residents say the change is needed amid rising speeding and reckless driving, though NDOT spokeswoman Meg Ragonese stated current medians are expected to reduce crashes by 37% with no plans for a center divider.  FOX Reno

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Preschool teacher Katelyn Donaker — from Kate Smith Elementary School in Sparks — received an early educator award from the Nevada Department of Education.  KTVN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The federal government is rethinking a $2.3 billion loan for the Thacker Pass mine project, a key part of a $3 billion plan that is set to start production in 2028. Nevada leaders have voiced support for the project while discussions continue over falling lithium prices and potential changes in equity—issues that could reshape the state's mining future.  KTVN
  • A nonprofit has filed a lawsuit against Washoe County after commissioners approved an amended Tahoe Area Plan that allows taller buildings and higher density in lake communities such as Incline Village—claims that the changes could worsen wildfire evacuation times and risk public safety. The suit argues that key threats were not considered before the plan was approved.  FOX Reno
  • Residents can enroll in a free CERT Academy offered by the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Citizen Corps beginning October 9 to learn disaster preparedness, fire safety, basic emergency medical care, light search and rescue, disaster psychology, and terrorism awareness at the Regional Public Safety Training Center in Reno. The six-session program unfolds over two weekends and applications are due October 7 for adults 18 and older while teens aged 16–17 may join with parental permission—training that prepares citizens to support local emergency response efforts.  KTVN
  • Sparks City Council voted unanimously on Sept. 22 to review rules for data centers and consider a moratorium on new centers while staff drafts zoning, water, noise and lighting standards — public input is accepted before the Oct. 13 meeting.  Reno Gazette-Journal

  • KTVN is launching its first local lifestyle show in years called 2 Plus You Nevada that premieres Monday at 3 p.m. and airs every weekday to feature local businesses—tourism, dining, community events, and more; longtime broadcaster Sarah Johns will host the program to bring viewers closer to northern Nevada.  KTVN
