COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Northern Nevada HOPES held a community baby shower on September 22nd — the first 50 attendees received free diapers.  KTVN
  • Dragon Lights returns on Friday at Rancho San Rafael Park—community members will gather for the event as it brings a unique local celebration to the park.  KTVN
  • Residents near Sparks Marina have faced persistent trash and odor issues in the canal from storm drain runoff after heavy rains. City officials hired a contractor for monthly cleanup and turned off a recirculating pump to test improvement—residents hope for a long-term solution.  FOX Reno
  • Over the weekend, the American Red Cross answered two house fires by sending volunteers to affected homes and providing food, water, and emergency supplies—while the Sparks Fire Department advised residents to service smoke alarms, inspect chimneys, and reduce clutter to prevent future fires.  KTVN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Sparks City Council voted Monday to begin drafting an ordinance to regulate data centers—city staff will now research potential rules to manage the facilities’ energy and water demands amid growing tech needs and environmental concerns.  News4

  • At the Sparks City Council meeting on September 22, John Firestone from the Life Change Center and Sky Ranch Middle School students shared updates on opioid settlement improvements and e-bike safety while Mayor Ed Lawson declared October as Careers in Construction Month and designated October 5–11 as Fire Prevention Week. Council approved actions on data center zoning, a $35,000,000 tourism bond issuance, a firefighters agreement, and a deviation for a multi-family residential project at 6635 Five Ridges Parkway — moves that will guide future local development.  City of Sparks
  • Senator Cortez Masto responded to a comment from a White House spokesperson on her tourism remarks made during a Culinary Workers Union speech, saying the statement misrepresented her views.
