COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Children up to 17 years old will operate construction equipment and see a RAVEN helicopter up close at the Northern Nevada Children's Cancer Foundation Dozers and Dirt event—offering a hands-on experience with heavy machinery.  KTVN
  • Truckee Meadows Tomorrow held Accentuate the Positive at Atlantis Casino Resort Spa on Monday, September 15th to honor local nonprofits like Renown Health, Nevada Women's Fund & Northern Nevada Literary Council for their work in improving community life. Board President Edward Estipona and Executive Director Erin Hanna-Butros Meyering said the event broke from bad news and led local governments to declare Accentuate the Positive Day for future celebrations.  KTVN

CULTURE NEWS

  • Polar Express tickets are now on sale for an event that will run Thursdays through Sundays from November through December—residents in Sparks can look forward to a fun ride this holiday season.  KTVN

ECONOMY NEWS

  • EmployNV will host job fairs at its career hub on Pyramid Way—and one in Lovelock—to help local job seekers explore employment opportunities.  KTVN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Washoe County school performance report released yesterday showed that the number of elementary schools with five stars doubled—underscoring ongoing efforts to improve education quality.  KTVN
  • Today, northern Nevada schools showed progress with new NSPF star ratings from the Nevada Department of Education as Washoe County added seven schools with five stars and Depoali Middle School improved its rating by two stars. Carson City School District also gained six stars overall but challenges remain since the state still ranks among the lowest in education quality—detailed data is pending due to a recent cyberattack.  FOX Reno

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former women firefighters and Senator Cortez Masto are urging a restart of the Women in Wildfire Boot Camp program that ended in February when federal DEI cuts removed its funding. The boot camp trained over 200 women each year to become wildland firefighters—experts say bringing it back could help ease the shortage of skilled workers as wildfires increase.  Reno Gazette-Journal
  • On Monday, the City of Sparks and RTC started phase two of the $86 million Sparks Boulevard Project to widen the road from four to six lanes and add sidewalks, barrier rails, and improved drainage—drivers should expect lane closures, detours, and transit disruptions until the work is finished by 2027.  KTVN
  • Due to staffing shortages, several Washoe County libraries including Sparks locations will close intermittently—residents may need to use alternative branches.  KTVN
