Good morning, Sparks. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 6th of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra has mostly distributed the $224,662.28 raised to help households recover from the Davis Fire that burned over 5,000 acres and forced more than 20,000 residents to evacuate. Catholic Charities will use any remaining funds to aid further recovery—supporting fire survivors and first responders into December.  KTVN
  • Volunteers from Rebuilding Together Northern Nevada + Wells Fargo will work on safety repairs for a Sun Valley home next week, updating the yard, gate, railings, and steps to help prevent falls for elderly owners Joe and Marie and their disabled daughter.  KTVN

CRIME NEWS

  • After a home invasion early Monday on Marsh Avenue left a victim tied up by a suspect with a machete, Reno and Sparks Police urged neighbors to secure doors—locking all entryways and setting security systems—and to report any video or details from Marsh, Sharon, and Walker areas.  KTVN
  • Washoe County Regional Animal Services is asking for help to locate Miguel Olier (approximately 5'9" and mid-40s) after an animal cruelty case on Sept. 3 on Nichols Boulevard in Sparks involved a black Chihuahua/Spaniel mix named Prince (missing his right hind leg).  News4

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews will restripe Mill Street near Terminal Way for a temporary lane configuration starting this weekend that reduces traffic to one lane in each direction from Terminal Way to I-580. Work from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. and then at 7 p.m. Monday to Friday will include intermittent closures at Matley Lane and Grand Sierra Resort Access Road, affecting RTC bus service and street parking until 2025.  KTVN
  • The Nevada DMV is 100% fully operational today for in-person driver's license and ID card services — offices now accept walk-ins and appointments amid the recent cyberattack. Nevadans needing vehicle transactions like registration and titling must use online services or kiosks until those systems are verified safe.  KTVN
  • The Nevada Highway Patrol joined other law enforcement agencies in a Joining Forces campaign that began September 5 and will run until September 22—aiming to remind pedestrians and drivers to share the road as 58 pedestrian deaths were reported earlier this year.  KTVN
