COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today at the Spanish Springs Library, the Citizens Advisory Board met with community members to review wildfire safety measures. Officials from the Sheriff's Office, city representatives and a Search and Rescue team member explained how to pack emergency supplies, plan evacuation routes and prepare homes against fire hazards.  KTVN

CRIME NEWS

  • A homeless woman identified as Makayln West was arrested in Sparks on Monday after she allegedly stabbed a 72-year-old man in his apartment at 2314 Greyhaven Lane just before 5 p.m.—neighbors who heard the commotion called police and officers used a police K9 to subdue her before she was booked on charges including Attempted Murder and Elder Abuse while the victim was rushed to Renown Medical Center for life-threatening injuries.  News4
  • Washoe County Regional Animal Services is asking for help finding Miguel Olier, a suspect in an animal cruelty incident on Nichols Boulevard in Sparks on September 3 when a black, long-haired Chihuahua/Spaniel mix named Prince lost his right hind leg—anyone with information is urged to contact authorities.  KTVN
  • Sparks Police arrested a woman on charges of attempted murder and elder abuse after she stabbed a 72-year-old man at his Greyhaven Lane apartment on September 1—neighbors reported shouting and following the suspect, which may have helped the victim receive urgent surgery at Renown Medical Center.  KTVN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The skies over Reno-Sparks are hazy from lightning-induced wildfires including the Garnet Fire in Sequoia National Forest and the TCU Lightning Complex — air quality experts say moderate PM2.5 conditions will affect the region today and that stronger winds later may clear the smoke.  News4

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Sept. 7, drivers will face overnight lane closures on I-80 east of Sparks between Vista Boulevard and USA Parkway as NDOT removes litter and conducts soil surveys for a planned widening project. Westbound lanes will close from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. and eastbound lanes from 7:30 p.m. to 4 a.m.—travelers should allow extra time for delays.  KTVN
