CRIME NEWS

  • The Regional Gang Unit arrested five suspected juvenile gang members on felony charges in Sparks after residents reported increased gang activity near Moorpark Court and El Rancho Drive last Friday and detectives seized drugs—cocaine and marijuana derivatives—money, paraphernalia and a car.  KTVN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Trainer Middle School has started a walking school bus — a group walk led by adults — in response to family concerns about safety in the school's walk zone. The program will help guide students to school safely.  KTVN
  • Today the Washoe County School District Board of Trustees held its first board meeting as schools returned to session and celebrated last year’s gains with higher math and English scores, a 17% rise in teacher surveys, and improved absenteeism in 71% of schools. The board passed Bill 49 to ease hiring, approved a measure to stop double testing, and honored new School Police Chief Seana Baker—steps that will support over 400 clubs to boost student engagement.  KTVN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office has launched a new bike unit that uses electric bikes to patrol the region and support community events. The unit is based in Incline Village—promoting e-bike safety education across the county.  KTVN
  • Nevada Attorney General Aaron D. Ford joined a bipartisan group of attorneys general—urging Instagram to change its new location-sharing feature due to safety and privacy concerns. The group requested that the company restrict the feature for minors and provide clear warnings on its use.  KTVN
