- ➤ Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada and Washoe County expanded services at Cares Campus on August 4 by shifting its volunteer-supported lunch program to serve guests directly. The organization now seeks volunteers for both lunch and dinner services—applications are open to individuals, businesses or groups. KTVN
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ The Washoe County District Attorney's Office sentenced 29-year-old Elvira Monroy to 3 years in prison today for killing her 12-week old puppy Lily (using a black electrical cord) after an argument with her boyfriend, and she will be eligible for parole in 15 months. KTVN
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Peavine Fire remains 35% contained after burning nearly 120 acres south of Cold Springs and smoke is still visible as crews address hotspots. Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue secured the fire’s western and southern edges while Union Pacific Railroad repairs a damaged rail line — NV Energy reports power has now been restored —. KTVN
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Nevada DMV unveiled major enhancements to its online services on DriveNV that let residents complete tasks like disabled plate requests + trailer registration from home. The agency will soon offer online payment + mail delivery options to streamline vehicle transactions. News4
- ➤ Travelers at Reno-Tahoe International Airport have faced road closures and parking adjustments since August 4 as construction on a new Central Utility Plant began under the MoreRNO Infrastructure Program. In September, work will start on a new Police and Airport Authority Headquarters in the Yellow Lot, which will affect airport access until its planned completion in 2027 — extra travel time is advised.
