CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Dakota Hawver, hit with a child support order on July 25, opened fire at the Grand Sierra Resort on July 28—killing three people before he was fatally shot by police overnight Wednesday. Reno Gazette-Journal
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ EmployNV will host several career fairs and job events across northern Nevada and online in August. Pre-registration is required on the EmployNV website for events including a virtual job fair in Reno on August 4, a resume workshop and a hiring event in Sparks on August 6 and 7, and additional career services in Silver Springs, Yerington, Battle Mountain, Lovelock and Sparks later this month. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Washoe County filed a motion in federal court to dismiss a lawsuit by former interim Registrar of Voters Cari Ann Burgess (fired in February after an investigation found mistakes with voter lists and sample ballots). The county says her claims of discrimination, fraud and retaliation are baseless and do not meet legal standards, and it seeks the case to be dismissed with prejudice. News4
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ People with Nevada Health Link insurance may pay 17.5% more next year, state data shows—this is much higher than the 7.11% rise from last year. Insurers say rising costs from ending extra tax credits and tariffs are behind the hike, with approved rates coming Oct. 1 and open enrollment starting Nov. 1 for coverage beginning Jan. 1.
