COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hot August Nights is set to run from August 1 through August 10 and will bring car shows, drag races, and a grand finale parade to northern Nevada. The events are planned at venues such as Virginia City + Sparks + Reno, with the finale parade and awards scheduled on August 10 at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.  News4
  • Kids from the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows toured the Arlington Avenue Bridges Project worksite on July 22 with Granite Construction + the RTC and AGCN leading the visit.  Reno Gazette-Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • A motorcyclist was arrested Tuesday morning near I-80 and USA Parkway after fleeing police and crashing when he failed to navigate a curve (State Route 439) before being taken to the hospital and booked into jail.  Reno Gazette-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washoe County residents are automatically enrolled in Smart911 — a system that sends alerts about evacuation or shelter in place orders during emergencies. County officials say the enrollment will improve community response when alerts are needed.  KTVN
  • Washoe County will host a Budget101 meeting—local residents can learn how the county prepares its budget and allocates funds. Officials will answer questions about spending decisions during the event.  KTVN
  • The Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation launched its new unemployment insurance portal on Tuesday as part of a $72 million upgrade that replaces an overburdened system with self-service tools, direct deposit, video tutorials, and a virtual assistant—officials said it helped over 90% of claimants access their accounts in the first five days. State director Christopher Sewell said DETR continues to monitor performance closely to resolve any issues.  News4
