COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Miguel Ribera Park now has a new playground with two play structures — and a shaded area for parents.  KTVN

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A head-on collision on Veterans Parkway between Pembroke Drive and Greg Street at 10:45 a.m. on Thursday left one person dead and two seriously injured, and the southbound lane is closed—police urge drivers to use alternate routes while the investigation continues.  KTVN

CRIME NEWS

  • A bail hearing was held on Thursday for two suspects in a deadly shooting near Greenbrae Drive that killed 19-year-old Felipe Acuna last month in Sparks with Fahad Estepa (who waived his court appearance and faced charges including open murder, domestic battery, and kidnapping with bail set at $500,000) and Jonathan Reyes (with bail set at $100,000 for harboring a felony offender) appearing in court.  KTVN
  • On July 17th, Sparks police arrested a man who allegedly threatened people with a knife while he was chugging a bottle of Tabasco sauce — he challenged bystanders to fight.  KTVN
  • A Sparks man aged 66 pleaded guilty to child sex crimes and was sentenced to life in prison—he will be eligible for parole after 10 years.  FOX Reno

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials said the Cornucopia Fire is 70% contained after burning more than 3,500 acres as of Jul 17 + firefighters continue working to secure the area.  KTVN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Community Health Alliance and Washoe County School District are hosting back-to-school vaccine clinics during July and August to give students their required immunizations. Clinics at Sparks schools—Dilworth Middle School on July 22 from 2-5:30 p.m., Spanish Springs High School on July 31 from 2-5:30 p.m., and Mendive Middle School on Aug. 6 from 2-5:30 p.m.—offer free vaccines for uninsured children while a parent must be present.  News4
