Neighbors in Sun Valley expressed concern after a fire broke out and many did not get phone evacuation alerts even though they signed up for them.

County officials said the alert system sometimes fails due to technology issues—residents are urged to evacuate if they feel unsafe.

Former MLB pitcher Dan Serafini was convicted on Monday in Placer County of first-degree murder, attempted murder and burglary for shooting his father-in-law in June 2021 at his Lake Tahoe home—his father-in-law died, his mother-in-law survived the attack before later dying by suicide, his accomplice Samantha Scott admitted to aiding him, and he is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 18.
