- ➤ Neighbors in Sun Valley expressed concern after a fire broke out and many did not get phone evacuation alerts even though they signed up for them. County officials said the alert system sometimes fails due to technology issues—residents are urged to evacuate if they feel unsafe. KTVN
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Former MLB pitcher Dan Serafini was convicted on Monday in Placer County of first-degree murder, attempted murder and burglary for shooting his father-in-law in June 2021 at his Lake Tahoe home—his father-in-law died, his mother-in-law survived the attack before later dying by suicide, his accomplice Samantha Scott admitted to aiding him, and he is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 18. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Fire officials halted progress on a wildfire burning about 3 to 5 acres (near Pyramid Highway) in Palomino Valley today. Evacuation orders have been lifted while NV Energy crews (using four firetrucks and one water truck to contain the blaze near a power substation) work to restore power for 736 customers. Reno Gazette-Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Monday, Sparks City Council approved a 12-month agreement with Sportsman Solutions that lets the company assess parks and manage sponsorship sales to boost revenue. The contract lowers the usual commission rate from 30 percent to 15—20 percent and passed unanimously after review by City staff. KTVN
- ➤ After Senate Bill 319 passed in session, Washoe County, Reno and Sparks agreed to form a board — the study will review fire risks and ways to improve firefighting efforts — as part of the new law. KTVN
