COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A neighborhood meeting is scheduled for the new Marango Springs development in Virginia Foothills+ community members may attend to learn more about the project.  KTVN
  • On June 26th, hundreds attended the funeral service for longtime Reno-Sparks Indian Colony Chairman Arlan Melendez at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno—community members remembered his leadership and service. Family members and tribal leaders gathered to honor his lasting impact.  Reno Gazette-Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Government officials announced that stage 1 fire restrictions will take effect next week in central and northwestern Nevada — the rules ban activities that could trigger fires on public lands.  KTVN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Legislators ended their session on June 3 and 191 bills will become law on July 1. Several bills focus on education—improving camera features on school buses for safety and updating bullying, sports and election rules—while other measures establish changes in volunteer roles, housing guidelines and gun safety.  KTVN
  • The City of Sparks will launch its Summer in the City pilot program — shutting down part of Victorian Avenue from July 3 until mid-October for various events.  KTVN
  • New state laws on elections, gun safety and more will take effect Tuesday in Nevada—Jaden Urban says the changes will update state rules.  KTVN
  • The Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation fired its executive director Heidi Anderson on June 24 for alleged financial mismanagement—internal and federal investigations by AmeriCorps and the U.S. Department of Labor are underway.  KTVN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Northern Nevada HOPES is urging locals to get an HIV test during HIV Awareness Days since regular testing can protect both individuals and their partners.  KTVN
