Good morning, Sparks. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 26th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army is asking community members to donate extra protein-packed foods—like chicken, ground meat and canned soups—because the food pantry sees more demand during school break while donations fall. They serve about 1,500 families a month and say federal cuts and rising prices are making it harder for people in our area to stretch their budgets.  KTVN
  • Today Eddy House previewed a new transitional living community with 36 studio apartments that will open this summer for homeless young adults ages 18 to 24. The two-year program will gradually raise fees (starting at $300 a month) and requires tenants to maintain full-time jobs.  KTVN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nevada State Parks is asking for local input on a new master plan for Spooner Lake & Backcountry State Park to guide its management for the next 20 years. Readers can submit comments by July 20th.  KTVN
  • The City of Sparks will launch its Summer in the City pilot program on July 3 with pop-up events like a craft fair and chalk art day while closing Victorian Avenue (from Pyramid Way to Victorian Plaza) through mid-October to boost downtown activity.  KTVN
  • People behind the Thacker Pass lithium mine remain confident the project will move forward even though the Division of Water Resources issued a cease and desist order to Lithium Nevada Corporation pending an investigation—further review is ongoing.  KTVN
  • The Supreme Court is scheduled to consider whether to hear arguments in the John Doe GPS tracker case — involving Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve — on September 29. In April — when the Nevada Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the First Amendment does not protect John Doe — lawyers appealed to keep the client's identity hidden.  KTVN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Community Health Alliance gained full ownership of its Wells Avenue center+ on June 25th and will expand the facility soon. The expansion will boost patient care+ and add new services.  KTVN
