Good morning, Sparks. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 13th of June.

CRIME NEWS

  • A man is accused of pointing a gun at a driver and shooting a tire after a crash and was booked on assault and related charges. Residents near Pyramid Lake and in the Reno-Carson City-Minden area face a Lake Wind Advisory from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and a Red Flag Warning from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. today that call for extra caution on the water and outdoors.  KTVN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fire crews worked Tuesday to contain the Marie Fire in Spanish Springs near Dolores Drive and Marie Way, leading to evacuations and a 75% containment while authorities investigate the cause. Local agencies also arranged school evacuations and temporary closures, and no injuries or structure losses were reported.  KTVN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Joe Lombardo broke Nevada's veto record by rejecting 76 bills passed in 2025—his vetoes included measures on paid family leave and gun control. He will decide on the remaining bills by the end of the legislative session.  FOX Reno
  • NV Energy is asking for a $224M rate hike that could cost Southern Nevada customers an extra $15–20 a month, although the Attorney General’s Bureau of Consumer Protection says only a $106M increase is necessary. The utility wants to include costs from the under-construction Greenlink project and $16.4M in affiliate expenses for lavish spending, and the Public Utilities Commission will hold hearings in September with any changes expected on October 1.  Reno Gazette-Journal
  • Gov. Joe Lombardo signed Reba’s Law on Tuesday, June 10, which raises the maximum prison term for animal cruelty causing death from four years to six years and gives criminal immunity to those who rescue pets left in cars—steps taken after a bulldog died from heat stroke behind a sealed tote last summer. Animal advocates say the law improves tools available to protect animals by strengthening penalties and clarifying rescue measures.  Reno Gazette-Journal
