ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A brush fire near Marie Way in Spanish Springs is burning toward homes as fire crews work to contain the blaze that has spread to about 70 acres—evacuation orders remain in effect and schools have been evacuated—and no structures have been lost so far. Reno Gazette-Journal
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Washoe County’s fuel tax will go up by just over 3.4 cents per gallon on July 1 to help fund road projects approved by voters in past years. Some locals question if the tax should be capped to ease driver costs—fuel tax revenues have supported billions in roadway improvements. Reno Gazette-Journal

- ➤ Evacuations have been lifted for the Marie Fire in Spanish Springs as fire crews continue to work with the blaze now 30% contained. NV Energy said more than 1,400 people are without power—restoration is expected by 2:30 a.m. KTVN
FINANCE NEWS
- ➤ A WalletHub study shows Nevada ranks No. 4 among states where homeowners spend a high share of their income on housing, with 35% going to costs while renters spend 29%. The study used data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Zillow and other sources—pointing to challenging housing affordability for local residents. Reno Gazette-Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Washoe County Manager Eric Brown announced his retirement at a commission meeting and will step down at the end of June after serving for five and a half years. The commission will outline next steps to replace him on June 17 + Brown noted that improvements to communication influenced his decision. News4
- ➤ After the legislative session, the Washoe County School Board must submit its final budget for FY2026 in less than 30 days and has cut the general fund deficit from $9.7 million to $2.1 million. The board also froze four vacant school police positions—ensuring continued safety—and will slightly raise athletic transportation fees while keeping concurrent enrollment fees unchanged. KTVN
