COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Food Bank of Northern Nevada announced that its Kids Cafe summer meals program will begin at most Washoe County sites on June 9 and continue through June 16, offering free on-site breakfast and lunch to children ages 2 to 18. The program requires no paperwork and serves meals daily at parks, libraries, schools and community centers—ensuring children receive meals when school is out. News4
- ➤ NV Energy has reported that over 4,500 people across Washoe County remain without power today, with Sparks experiencing planned major outages — smaller ones linked to a transformer issue and equipment failure. An outage in northwest Reno that began around 7:13 p.m. is still under investigation with no set restoration time. KTVN
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On June 10 at 10 p.m., Nevada State Police Trooper Marcus McIntosh fired his gun at suspect Darnelle Boykins after Boykins shot at him during a chase that began at a gas station near Veterans Parkway—his weapon jammed as he advanced toward the troopers—resulting in his arrest and a 52-year sentence after pleading guilty to attempted murder and related charges. - ➤ The Washoe County School District said it identified about 30 people involved in a May 22 break-in at Reno High School and is taking disciplinary actions—ranging from suspensions to loss of privileges including graduation participation. Reno Gazette-Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Lombardo signed Assembly Bill 198—Lizzy's Law—that requires businesses renting bounce houses to be licensed, insured and follow new wind speed and weight guidelines designed to keep children safe. The law will take effect on January 1, 2026 after changes were prompted by the 2019 incident that claimed 9-year-old Lizzy Hammond's life. KTVN
- ➤ Former interim Registrar of Voters Cari-Ann Burgess filed a lawsuit against Washoe County, alleging the county created a toxic work environment, discriminated against her, and defamed her by saying she took medical leave due to stress issues—Washoe County said it will file a response and vigorously defend the action.
