COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Food Bank of Northern Nevada announced that its Kids Café will restart this summer to serve hot meals for kids aged 2-18 at various on-site locations in the Reno/Sparks area. The program will run at sites such as North Valleys Library (lunch from 11:30 to 12:00, June 9 to August 2) and Sparks Library (lunch from 12:15 to 12:45, June 8 to August 2).  KTVN
  • Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada will face a $1.5 million budget shortfall when federal cuts take effect on June 30 & is launching a community fundraiser to fill this 20% drop in funding that supports 40,000 people each month.  KTVN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Starting June 7, Washoe County School District students will ride RTC buses free with their student IDs and Token Transit App—students without phones will get a paper pass to help reduce long walks and cut chronic absences.  KTVN
  • Starting June 7, students in the Washoe County School District will ride RTC buses for free using their student IDs and the Token Transit App — officials say the program is designed to help kids get around town.  KTVN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On June 3rd, Sparks City Council approved a new budget and set plans to deal with a shortfall—officials said they will soon outline specific measures to close the gap.  KTVN
  • Sparks City Council voted on a $112 million budget after months of work to nearly close an $18.2 million gap, cutting 13 city worker jobs—including five firefighters—and freezing three police officer positions. The new budget raises the waste management fee from 8% to 14% and uses drones to help dispatch first responders—officials said they expect a higher deficit next fiscal year.  KTVN
