COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Sparks is partnering with Moana Nursery in the TreeMendous Sparks program — entries are open from May 15 through June 5 — to offer 300 free trees that will boost local green spaces. Winners will be notified and must pick up their tree at Moana Nursery during a scheduled window starting June 15 and be responsible for planting it.  KTVN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Starting May 15, Sparks residents may enter the TreeMendous Sparks program to win a free Moana Grown tree from Moana Nursery. Winners will be notified by email and must pick up their tree during scheduled windows — June 15 to June 30, July 1 to July 14, or July 15 to July 31 — while unclaimed trees may be redrawn in August.  News4

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, the Sparks City Council approved the city manager's second budget option that calls for a 15% overall reduction in general fund staff — with 11 possible layoffs — and an increase in the Waste Management franchise fee from 8% to 18%, which adds about $32 per year for the average household. The council also approved the five-year capital improvement plan.  KTVN
  • Lane closures and reductions are in effect on Mt. Rose Highway near Galena Creek Regional Park for roadside ditch clearing and tree removal that began at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, May 12 and will continue until May 15—motorists should plan for delays.  KTVN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Washoe County Senior Center will reopen Friday, May 16 at 10 a.m. after nearly $2.8 million in renovations that added upgraded lighting, new dining areas and a modern OnMed CareStation offering remote consultations, specialist referrals and e-prescriptions. The event will also feature the Home Means Nevada Art Exhibit (displaying local photography) for visitors to enjoy.  News4
  • The CDC launched an investigation on Saturday into a Listeria outbreak linked to ready-to-eat foods produced by Fresh and Ready Foods LLC that led to 10 hospitalizations in Nevada and California—The products, including sandwiches and protein snacks, were sold in four states and consumers are urged to follow recall alerts.  News4
