ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A crash closed a section of I-80 west near Vista Blvd in Sparks when a semi-truck spilled sheet metal onto the road after a collision with a Jeep at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday—no injuries were reported and officials have not said when the roadway will reopen.  KTVN

CRIME NEWS

  • The Northern Nevada Organized Retail Crime Association will host its first retail crime workshop in Reno on Friday, May 9 at 9:00 a.m. at the Regional Public Safety Training Center—featuring talks by Washoe County District Attorney Christopher Hicks, Reno Police Chief Katherine Nance, Sparks Police Deputy Chief Clint Bellamy, and Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam to train retail loss prevention staff.  KTVN
  • ICE agents arrested more than a dozen people Tuesday morning across northern Nevada as part of their enforcement actions against individuals with prior criminal convictions—among them, 56-year-old Rodolfo Hernandez-Yanez, a Mexican national arrested near Carson City while taking his children to school, who will be processed before deportation.  News4

EDUCATION NEWS

  • When school starts on August 11, 21 Washoe County schools will have new principals with changes at 16 elementary schools, four middle schools, and one high school. Sparks schools such as Kate Smith Elementary (new principal Jennifer Hodges), Diedrichsen Elementary (new principal Courtney Sego), and Shaw Middle (seeking a replacement) will see leadership updates.  Reno Gazette-Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Northern Nevada Public Health and Washoe County School District launched the Lawn and Garden Exchange Project today to replace gas-powered landscaping equipment in local schools using a $250K donation+ sourced from DMV smog check fees. The donation replaces 25% of the district's gas-powered machines, including lawnmowers, backpack blowers, string trimmers, handheld blowers, edgers, hedge trimmers, and chainsaws+ to help improve air quality.  KTVN
  • NV Energy will boost wildfire season readiness with safety measures that include clearing vegetation, replacing overhead lines with fire-resistant materials, and moving select power lines underground. The company will use advanced weather stations and wildfire detection cameras — then trigger Fire Season Settings, planned outages, and Emergency De-Energization to protect equipment and communities.  KTVN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawyers for John Doe appealed to the Supreme Court to keep his identity secret in an ongoing GPS tracker case — last month the Nevada Supreme Court ruled that First Amendment protections do not apply.  KTVN
