- ➤ A wildfire education workshop will be held on May 20 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center — the session will provide local residents with essential wildfire safety information. KTVN
- ➤ The American Institute of Architects of Northern Nevada & the Food Bank of Northern Nevada announced winners for the 22nd annual CANstruction event at Meadowood Mall. Twenty-two teams including 12 student teams built their can structures on April 30 & they will be on display with People’s Choice voting until May 5 at 6 p.m. KTVN

- ➤ Sparks Police had a brief standoff with a big rig driver who surrendered peacefully—officers took him into custody on May 2. KTVN

- ➤ On May 1, the United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra cut its United Readers early literacy program after losing $700,000 in funding due to reduced AmeriCorps grants (a change that may affect local literacy opportunities). KTVN
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ NV Energy is preparing for a severe fire season in northern Nevada by training crew members in a mock exercise and planning equipment upgrades that automatically shut off power lines—forecasters warn that a hotter, drier summer may increase brushfire risks and lead to planned public safety outages for residents in affected zones. - ➤ University of Nevada, Reno Extension and Nevada Division of Forestry are launching a neighborhood ambassador program to help residents prepare for wildfires. Hoff Peace Officer Memorial ceremony with hundreds in attendance for performances, award presentations, and a 21-gun salute—honoring first responders and remembering North Las Vegas officer Jason Roscow who died in February.
