- ➤ Residents in Sparks are advised to use alternate routes as city officials schedule road closures for the Cinco De Mayo festival, with Victorian Avenue closing from Victorian Plaza Circle West to Victorian Plaza Circle East at 2:00 a.m. May 2—Victorian Plaza and Avenue of the Oaks will also be closed until 6:00 a.m. May 6. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The City of Sparks invites residents to name a new art sculpture on Victorian Avenue across from the Galaxy Theatre; the piece was designed by artist Jim Gallucci and partly funded by a National Endowment for the Arts grant. Submissions will be accepted until May 14, 5 p.m. and the top choices will be shared on the City of Sparks Facebook page + the winning name will be displayed on a placard at the sculpture. KTVN
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, the Bureau of Land Management Nevada puts a Fire Prevention Order in effect that bans fireworks, steel ammo and explosive materials on all BLM-managed land in Nevada through October 31. Anyone who violates the order may face fines—and be charged for any repair costs from fire damage. KTVN
- ➤ Starting May 7, most adults flying will need a passport or a Real ID that meets federal standards instead of an old driver’s license. The Nevada DMV is offering walk-in appointments on Tuesday and Thursday from 3 to 4 p.m. at locations in Reno, Carson City, Sahara, Flamingo, Decatur and Henderson until May 15—spots are limited on a first-come, first-served basis. - ➤ The Community Health Alliance will host a free Family Health Festival on May 22nd at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.—providing services such as back-to-school vaccines, blood pressure checks, WIC enrollment, and food bank support while supplies last. KTVN
