- ➤ A public celebration of life for Jesus 'Chuy' Gutierrez is set for May 5 at Silver Legacy Hotel Casino in Midtown Reno from 2—5 p.m. Friends and family will share memories and photographs to honor the late restaurateur behind Mari Chuy’s Mexican restaurant. KTVN
- ➤ Nine area law firms will compete in a charity drive to raise funds and food for FBNN (organized by the Washoe County Bar Association) when the drive starts on May 1, and the public can donate online through participating law firm pages (with donations accepted until May 23). KTVN
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ An investigation is underway after a physical altercation at a residence on the 4600 block of W. Leonesio Drive in Sun Valley on Monday night when two people were taken to local hospitals and one later died — the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office said there is no ongoing threat to the public. News4
- ➤ One person died after a fight at a Sun Valley home on April 28+ deputies arrived at 10:30 p.m. in the 4600 block of W. Leonesio Drive and transported two people to the hospital+ the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office said the case is under investigation. Reno Gazette-Journal
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ The American Clean Power Association said its members will invest $100 billion this decade in a domestic battery supply chain if Washington backs their plan to cut dependence on China. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Truckee Meadows Community College held its groundbreaking ceremony for a new theater building at the Dandini campus yesterday—its old theater closed in 2019—and added three classrooms for its Architecture Program. The building will give the TMCC Theatre Program a permanent home. KTVN
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Governor Lombardo and BLM Nevada signed a data sharing agreement today to improve coordination on federal lands that may be available for disposal. - ➤ State lawmakers proposed speeding up the rezoning process to turn vacant commercial lands into multi-family housing in Clark and Washoe counties — Assembly Bill 241 passed the Assembly and is set to be heard today in the Senate Commerce and Labor Committee. The measure aims to address Nevada’s housing shortage while officials debate its potential impact on local land use — some worry about unintended changes while others back the faster development.
