COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Sparks Fire is placing green waste dumpsters around Sparks to help residents remove excess vegetation and lower fire risks. The initiative helps keep properties safer + supports community safety efforts. KTVN
- ➤ Seniors at the Northern Nevada State Veterans Home received a special visit from equine volunteers from Horsemanship for Heroes on Friday. KTVN
- ➤ The Wingfield Springs Preservation Group is hosting a community meeting today to discuss the proposed Red Hawk development. Locals can attend and offer input on future plans for the area. KTVN
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ High school students from local schools will join firefighters for Mock Fire (a simulated wildfire training) in the hills near Hidden Valley later this week. The hands-on exercise, part of the Fire Science Career and Technical Education Program, will build skills for wildland firefighting careers. KTVN
- ➤ Scott Benton, Sheena Harvey, and Brooke Westlake are competing for the open Washoe School Board District F seat (covering eastern Washoe County including Sparks and Spanish Springs). Harvey reported fundraising on April 15 while incumbent Adam Mayberry runs for Sparks City Council; the primary will advance the top two candidates to the November election. Reno Gazette-Journal
- ➤ Today, the school board will review HR guidelines for deputy superintendent Tiffany McMaster’s May 12 interview, which allows up to 14 questions with each trustee plus one question for staff, students, parents and the public. Some educators and union members want a more open process + more community input. Reno Gazette-Journal
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue urges residents to rake dead leaves, sticks, and pine needles and to water lawns as spring wildfire season nears. Residents must finish any open burns by Thursday, Apr. 30 — a critical step to reduce fire risk. KTVN
- ➤ Thousands of sheep will soon graze in Arrowcreek to reduce wildfire risk as part of Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s fire mitigation efforts. Herders from Borda Land and Sheep Company will monitor roughly 900 sheep in nearby watersheds + guard dogs will keep predators away. KTVN
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Residents in Sparks may travel to Reno Public Market on May 14 from 3:30-7 p.m. for a free skin cancer screening provided by local dermatologists and UNR med students who will offer early detection and referrals for follow-up care. KTVN
