COMMUNITY NEWS

  • TMCC will host 'Take Back the Night' on April 23 at the Dandini Campus Student Center, where partner groups including Safe Embrace & Crisis Support Services of Nevada will hold a march, vigil, and resource fair to support survivors and raise awareness of sexual violence.  KTVN
  • The SPCA of Northern Nevada will fully reopen its Adoption Center on April 14 after finishing repairs for HVAC issues that closed the facility since February 3. The center will offer new hours (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and adoptions by appointment (pets are being returned gradually).  News4

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A crash on southbound I-580 at Moana Lane caused major traffic delays on Friday as emergency crews responded and drivers were advised to use alternate routes.  KTVN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Reno High School's 'We the People' team placed fifth nationally today at the finals held in Washington, D.C.—they were the only Nevada team competing. The contest featured 48 teams and used simulated Congressional Hearings to test the students' knowledge of American government.  KTVN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nevada Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar’s bill would let candidates use campaign funds for child care, elder care and other costs that come with public office, a change meant to help those serving in low-paying roles. The proposal also sets new limits for special elections and expands reporting rules for candidates and PACs (the committee took no action on the measure Thursday).  Reno Gazette-Journal
  • The IRS reminds Sparks residents to file their taxes before Tuesday, April 15 to avoid penalties—free help is available through IRS-certified volunteers and online options. Taxpayers may also file for an extension if their returns are incomplete.  Reno Gazette-Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Renown Health paused services at its Crisis Care Center in Sparks after federal ARPA funds ended. Officials are meeting with local leaders to get new funding—people in crisis should call 988 for help.  KTVN
