GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State lawmakers are considering measures after thousands of Nevada homeowners saw their insurance canceled due to rising wildfire risk; Assembly Bill 437 would create a state-run insurance plan as a last resort and must clear the committee today or it will be killed. A second proposal, Assembly Bill 376, would let insurers test new products for four years—while opinions remain divided—as the state faces more wildfire challenges.  Reno Gazette-Journal
  • Nevada lawmakers are considering new measures to track and limit corporate investors in the housing market—Sen. Neal's SB391 would cap corporate purchases at 100 homes a year while Assemblymember Considine has proposed combining LLCs for commerce tax purposes. A third proposal, Senate Bill 242, would require homes to be listed for 30 days before investment companies can buy them to help keep housing affordable for families.  Reno Gazette-Journal
  • Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar and Attorney General Aaron Ford said they won a legal fight when the Ninth Circuit dismissed a lawsuit that challenged the Election Worker Protection Act—law passed to defend election officials from harassment. The court ruled the plaintiffs lacked standing, reaffirming a previous dismissal by the district court.  News4
  • Assemblymember Sandra Jauregui said she is deeply disappointed as the Nevada Realtors reversed their support for AB 280— a pilot bill that would provide seniors with one year of rent stabilization and require landlords to refund unused application fees. The bill, revised from a 10% to a 5% increase cap, passed the Assembly Commerce and Labor Committee on a party-line vote and will let lawmakers test its impact on fixed-income renters.  Reno Gazette-Journal
