BUSINESS NEWS

  • Reno-Tahoe International Airport will raise parking fees on April 7 as part of its major expansion project. Long-term garage rates will rise from $16 to $22 and surface rates from $12 to $18 — hourly fees will also increase after the first hour.  Reno Gazette-Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Nevada residents received the seventh largest average tax refund from the 2022 tax year at about $5,090 (above the national average of $4,381) according to LendingTree analysis. About 42% of U.S. taxpayers rely on their refunds to pay off debt (especially parents, millennials and those earning under $30,000).  Reno Gazette-Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Bears are emerging from hibernation as spring brings warm weather and fresh vegetation to Sparks, prompting them to search for food in lower areas. The Nevada Department of Wildlife estimates there are 600 to 700 bears in Western Nevada and advises residents to secure trash + avoid feeding the animals.  KTVN

FINANCE NEWS

  • Nevada’s Miriam Adelson, a megadonor and widow of casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, dropped to 56th on Forbes’ billionaires list with an estimated worth of $32.1 billion even though her wealth increased from last year’s $29.8 billion — she remains one of the richest people in the world.  Reno Gazette-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On April 2, a Nevada Legislative Committee in Reno heard a bill that would expand paid family leave from eight weeks to 12 weeks for workers—lawmakers will review details in upcoming sessions.  KTVN
  • Nevadans must update their Real ID by May 7th—if they do not, they will be unable to travel through airports or enter federal buildings. Officials urge residents to complete the update soon to meet the new law.  KTVN
  • The City of Sparks is partnering with Vitalant to host a blood drive next week — scheduled for Monday, April 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sparks Police Department Training Room on Prater Way where donors must bring a photo ID.  KTVN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center treated many patients with respiratory infections and flu that arrived in waves, while doctors warned that symptoms from spring blooms might be mistaken for allergies. A report from Northern Nevada Public Health showed drops in flu, COVID, and RSV, and Renown Health noted a rise in allergy and shingles cases—leading experts to urge early preventive measures such as proper hygiene and allergy medicine.  KTVN
