COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Community Food Pantry of Reno/Sparks is concerned that proposed federal cuts to the Emergency Food Assistance Program could drain its food supply that currently provides 60% of its stock. If the cuts are approved, the pantry will use donations and grants to buy food—last year they fed over 85,000 people with a 21% increase in clients.  KTVN

CRIME NEWS

  • The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating vandalism at county parks where graffiti has defaced basketball hoops, park benches, porta-potties, and buildings—residents are urged to report suspicious activity.  KTVN

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sparks Heritage Museum is marking its 40th anniversary this April with a celebration on Tuesday, April 1 at 12:00 noon—featuring a commemorative cake to be cut by Dr. Michael Fischer, who portrays Nevada’s 9th Governor John Sparks. The museum is also holding a membership and fundraising drive.  KTVN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Spread the Word Nevada is asking locals to donate children's books and money at designated sites in town throughout April to support literacy programs. The drive aims to collect 40,000 books + raise $50,000 for children's reading programs.  KTVN
  • The fourth annual Ante Up Poker Tournament held on Mar 29 raised funds for scholarships for young adults who survived cancer and plan to attend secondary education—organizers said the event will help more survivors pursue their academic goals.  KTVN

  • Nevada Baseball clinched its series with a 9-1 win on March 29 and will go for its first series sweep today against Washington State.  KTVN
