- ➤ 2 News Nevada has aired a 30-minute special investigating Washoe County juvenile justice as staff at the Jan Evans Juvenile Justice Center are managing a surge in youth mental health challenges—60 to 70% of detainees face a diagnosable condition. The investigation also noted that although youth delinquency has reached a 20-year low nationally, a small group of violent youth offenders and a rise in teen felony charges for possession of concentrated cannabis are stretching local resources. - ➤ Churchill County Sheriff's Office is asking the public to help locate Jayson Daniel—reported missing after his family requested a welfare check—and Nancy Griffiths, who was last seen with him near Peppermill Casino in the Reno Sparks area while he drove a charcoal gray 2021 Ford Ranger with license plate 70H911. - ➤ Sparks Police are asking for help to identify a motorcyclist who fled a traffic stop on March 26 at 9:40 a.m.—the unlicensed rider on a white motorcycle sped away near Wingfield Hills Road and Rolling Meadows Drive and was last seen traveling northbound on Pyramid Highway. News4
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Washoe County commissioners will begin budget talks in April to decide if libraries will keep about $4.5 million in extra funding after voters turned down a tax override last November. Library director Jeff Scott warned that losing the funds will force cuts to staff, books, and technology budgets — the decision will be discussed on April 8th. Reno Gazette-Journal
- ➤ Governor Lombardo announced Steve Canavero as the new interim Superintendent of Public Instruction for the Nevada Department of Education, set to begin on April 14th—he served in the role from 2016 to 2019 and will guide the education transition. KTVN
- ➤ Today, Governor Lombardo sent a letter to the Secretaries of Interior and Housing + Urban Development asking for Nevada's inclusion in the Joint Task Force on Federal Land for Housing because over 85% of the state's land is federally managed. He warned that projections show Washoe County could run out of developable land by 2027 and Clark County by 2032 while he plans to push for state funding to support a bill for $1 billion in new attainable housing units. - ➤ A new housing report from RealtyHop shows that Reno is ranked as the 21st least affordable metro area for March, with median home prices rising to $572,000 and households needing to spend 46.4% of their income on mortgages—this contrasts with cities like Seattle and Honolulu which offer higher incomes to balance their steeper home prices.
