CRIME NEWS

  • Sparks Police arrested three people in a retail theft operation with Walmart and Kohl's, charging them with petit larceny, controlled substance possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, and an outstanding warrant while issuing tickets to two others and recovering about $1,250 in stolen merchandise — officials said they remain committed to working with local businesses.  KTVN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Graduate assistants at UNLV, UNR and the Desert Research Institute gathered today to ask lawmakers to pass Assembly Bill 191 so they can work together for better pay and safer work conditions; the Nevada System of Higher Education still has not recognized their union despite over 2,100 assistants backing the move. They say low pay and long hours force many to struggle with basic needs — a change the bill is designed to bring.  Reno Gazette-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Greyhound Lines Inc., a Flix North America brand, launched a new bus route connecting Reno to Salt Lake City yesterday that will serve Sparks, Battle Mountain, Elko, Winnemucca and West Wendover as part of a public-private partnership with NDOT.  News4
  • Sen. Lisa Krasner is introducing a bill to let Guard members choose a trial instead of a nonjudicial punishment—a right removed in 2019. The Nevada National Guard estimates the change could cost the state over $1M a year by expecting three trials annually, though former Guard lawyers say the cost is likely too high and lawmakers will vote on the bill by April 11.  Reno Gazette-Journal
