COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Dancing in the Streets Festival is seeking $20,000 in donations so the event can take place later this year in Sparks. Organizers encourage community support (donations help make the festival a reality).  KTVN

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Trader Joe’s confirmed it will release a new large tote with lavender handles + pink logo, but no release date has been set. The grocer said pastel mini totes will arrive mid-March at local stores.  Reno Gazette-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNR is moving forward with plans to establish Nevada's first veterinary medical school; the first class is set to start in 2029.  Reno Gazette-Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Nevada Department of Wildlife will stock 5,000 Rainbow Trout at Sparks Marina starting Wednesday, Mar. 11 — fish stocking will continue into early summer and expand to other urban ponds later this month.  KTVN
  • The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District will conduct routine pile burns on Sunday, March 8 at the Silver Lake Volunteer Fire Station on Red Rock Road, igniting about 40 piles. Smoke may drift into the north valleys — residents sensitive to smoke should exercise caution.  KTVN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nevada now blocks SNAP benefits from being used to buy candy or sugary drinks following a USDA waiver approved March 4. The two-year policy affects 444,000 participants and aims to promote healthier food choices.  Reno Gazette-Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Northern Nevada Public Health updated respiratory illness numbers for Feb. 22 to Feb. 28 with 12 flu hospitalizations this week and 167 reported RSV cases while COVID-19 hospitalizations remained low. The agency urges residents to get vaccinated at its clinic for kids and the uninsured by calling (775) 3282402.  KTVN

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • County leaders will consider Sierra Reflections after 1 p.m. Tuesday, a proposal to develop 940 single-family home lots, parks and trails on a 760-acre site north of Eastlake Boulevard. Local residents oppose the plan because they fear its high density may change the rural character of the South Valleys.  News4

SPORTS NEWS

  • Sierra Regional Roller Derby will open its season with two home games at El Sol de Nevada on Mar. 28. The first game starts at 3 p.m. and a second, fundraising matchup at 5 p.m. will let fans vote on rule changes.  KTVN
  • The Nevada men's basketball team hosts Air Force today at Lawlor Events Center — the game airs live on Nevada Sports Net with a free livestream and tips off at 7 p.m.  News4
