COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Recent heavy snow has led local homeless residents to seek warm overnight shelter. Local agencies are coordinating emergency responses — providing beds and support for those in need.  KTVN

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Washoe County Sheriff's Office volunteer team assisted Nevada County in a Castle Peak avalanche rescue on Thursday, Feb. 19 by using ski gear and a snow cat to recover six injured after 15 people were caught in the incident — they will continue supporting the search as conditions remain dangerous.  KTVN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WCSD closed its schools Wednesday morning as a storm left eight inches of snow in the valleys — causing I-80 to close from the California state line to Colfax. The district noted that the weather may extend the school year.  Reno Gazette-Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Snow is returning to the greater Reno area today — including Sparks — as a winter weather advisory is in effect from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m., with 2–4 inches expected on valley roads while local colleges delay morning operations.  Reno Gazette-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mount Rose highway has reopened after winter storms forced a closure; officials say maintenance teams (standing by) are monitoring the road and urge drivers to use caution.  KTVN
  • CHP officials remind Sparks drivers to clear snow from their vehicles — officers will pull over cars with heavy buildup. The caution is issued amid ongoing wintry conditions where extra snow can hinder safe driving.  KTVN

  • City of Sparks officials said crews clear Priority 1 and Priority 2 streets, main arterials & connector roads first to keep key routes open for schools, hospitals and nursing facilities while leaving residential neighborhoods snow-covered to avoid blocking driveways.  KTVN
  • Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 50 reopened Wednesday morning after nearly a full day closure due to heavy snow in the Sierra Nevada, but fresh snow is expected today + transportation officials advise drivers to plan ahead for delays.  News4
