COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Girls on the Run Sierras (a nonprofit) is hosting a shoe drive through Feb. 28 to supply new athletic shoes for young runners as they prepare for spring sessions. Collection boxes at local businesses in Sparks and nearby areas will accept donations during the drive. KTVN
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A crash on I-80 east near Lockwood occurred around 5 a.m. Thursday and caused traffic backups near Sparks Nugget casino; there were no injuries and a crew responded promptly. KTVN
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Maxwell Elementary was placed on lockdown yesterday at 12:39 p.m. due to nearby police activity and reopened at 1:03 p.m. with no further details provided by WCSD. FOX Reno
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ In Nevada, initial jobless claims dropped to 2,596 for the week ending Jan. 24 (from 3,166 the week before), according to Labor Department data. Nationwide figures also declined to 209,000 claims last week. Reno Gazette-Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Alice Maxwell Elementary School resumed normal operations Thursday after a secured campus alert was lifted when police investigated shots heard nearby (no threat was found). School activities continue as normal. KTVN
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ NDOT is conducting emergency repairs on USA Parkway between Italy Drive and Denmark Drive near the Walmart northern entrance because of a damaged water main; northbound lanes are fully closed and one southbound lane is carrying northbound traffic (drivers should expect delays). KTVN
