COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Catholic Charities is expanding its services+ relocating its food pantry from Valley Road to a larger space on Eureka Avenue+ aiming to boost access for local families.  KTVN
  • Washoe County’s Regional Transportation Commission awarded the Sanford Center for Aging a $483,269 grant that will fund 7,800 free door-to-door rides for older adults in Reno and Sparks through Sept. 30, 2027. The funding will cover volunteer mileage reimbursements, fuel, and background checks (supporting service growth).  KTVN
  • Tickets for the Aces 4th of July celebration will go on sale to the public Friday in Sparks, offering locals a chance to join a festive community event.  KTVN

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Beefy's in Midtown is undergoing renovations & its owner transferred the restaurant's health permit to his name ahead of its end-of-November expiration.  KTVN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nevada Treasurer Zach Conine said current prepaid tuition contracts remain locked at in-state rates despite tuition increases approved for public colleges, with fees set to rise up to 12% over the next three years (per the Nevada State Treasury).  Reno Gazette-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Clark and Washoe counties will resume early-morning homelessness counts this week to meet HUD guidelines; the counts start at 3 a.m. in Las Vegas and 5 a.m. at other sites, and officials expect higher numbers as rising rents drive more people into unstable housing.  Reno Gazette-Journal
  • Tax season kicked off on Jan. 26 as the IRS began accepting 2025 returns + the Nevada Department of Taxation introduced new deductions and updated Sales and Use tax deadlines. Local business owners and tax filers are encouraged to review the changes for compliance.  KTVN

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation is hosting its 15th Annual Live Know the Gold Radiothon at SCHEELS in Sparks on Thursday, Feb. 5 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Donations (matched dollar for dollar up to $1.25 million) will support local children with cancer.  KTVN

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Red Hawk Golf and Resort is planning to close its Lakes Course and build up to 606 homes by converting the 36-hole golf course into 18 holes; the proposal, submitted on Jan. 21, aims to boost local revenue amid housing needs and is pending a land use amendment.  Reno Gazette-Journal
