COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada will move its food pantry and essentials closet to a new 25,000 sqft warehouse at 435 Eureka Ave on Feb. 2 to better serve local families & seniors; its Fourth Street thrift store will expand into the old pantry.  News4
  • News 4-Fox 11 will collect canned goods & monetary donations on Friday, Feb. 6 at Smith's on South Meadows to support the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, which helps college students facing food insecurity by partnering with campus pantries at UNR and TMCC.  News4
  • Residents in Sparks can vote in the RGJ Grocery Bracket contest featuring local favorites such as Smith's versus WinCo and Target versus Walmart; votes are open until 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27 (contest winners will be revealed later).  Reno Gazette-Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A job fair is scheduled for this Saturday at Greater Nevada Field to provide local job seekers with networking opportunities with potential employers. The event offers a chance for community members to explore new career options.  KTVN
  • NV Energy's CEO apologized to about 45,000 customers for overcharges dating back decades and promised $63M in full refunds including interest. Current customers will see credits added to their bills + former customers will get refund checks once regulators approve the plan, with payments starting within 120 days.  News4

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Alice Smith Elementary School was evacuated when smoke was reported, but students returned at 12:45 p.m. after firefighters confirmed the smoke was caused by an HVAC issue in the attic (no injuries were reported).  KTVN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washoe County’s homeless housing program may retain its $3 million federal grant after a court halted an announced $1.8 million cut on Nov. 13; the decision protects rapid rehousing and supportive housing for 80 local households and helps 925 people statewide avoid homelessness.  KTVN
  • Washoe County, the City of Reno and Sparks are asking residents for input on local park improvements. Their feedback will help guide future changes.  KTVN
