  • Great Basin Federal Credit Union partnered with Communities in Schools of Western Nevada to host its Giving Trees drive this holiday season at four branches, filling 240 gift tags and collecting over 1,500 donated items along with $28,000 in kind contributions & $860.59 in cash donations.  KTVN

  • Marcolino's Italia is set to hold its grand opening Saturday, Jan. 10 at 11 a.m. at the old Rapscallion building on Wells Avenue and Vesta Street — the restaurant will offer a lunch menu along with an extended happy hour that nods to the location’s Reno history.  KTVN

  • Rising gold and silver prices have spurred renewed buying interest in northern Nevada. Local shop managers and mining experts say higher prices + new buyer activity could shift production strategies as the market remains volatile in 2026.  News4

  • Fall 2025 saw Wolf Pack student-athletes achieve a record GPA of 3.211, with 14 teams reaching at least a 3.0 while women’s golf led at 3.803 (athletic leaders credit consistent academic support).  KTVN

  • Washoe County officials are reviewing zoning rules for equine businesses after input from nearly 1,900 survey respondents and 150 workshop attendees, and they will hold a public meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 12 — at South Valleys Library off Wedge Parkway — to gather more community insight.  News4

HEALTH NEWS

  • Northern Nevada Public Health will host a free vaccine clinic to offer immunizations for flu, COVID, and RSV in response to a recent rise in cases. Residents are encouraged to attend for essential shots + check with local health services for details on times and location.  KTVN
  • Reno funding expands mental health support for Washoe County students, staff and families by partnering with Care Solace, a free service that connects them with local behavioral health providers 24/7. The service is now available districtwide.  News4
  • Officials from the Nevada Health Authority updated lawmakers on Tuesday, Dec. 30 on plans to use $180 million in federal rural funding to offer signing bonuses and housing assistance that attract health care providers in rural areas.
