CULTURE NEWS

  • Sparks is calling for Nevada artists to design a mural celebrating the city’s role in the American West. Offered at Tony Armstrong Amphitheater in downtown Victorian Square — with a $17,000 budget — applications are due March 1 at 11:45 p.m. and the artwork will debut at a public celebration.  FOX Reno

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Nevada fell by a little more than two cents on Monday, Jan. 5 — a change that may offer modest relief for drivers in Sparks as stations adjust their rates.  KTVN

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nevada families can enroll in the Prepaid Tuition Program to lock in in-state tuition until April 15 — new referral codes qualify both parties for a $100 Visa gift card after the first payment is verified. The Nevada Treasury offers several payment plan options to ease college costs.  KTVN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Heavy snow from weekend storms blanketed local ski resorts yesterday - prompting adjustments for skiers and road crews.  KTVN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers along Sparks Boulevard must plan for delays as RTC implements 24/7 lane closures over the next 70 days. The work closes north and southbound inside lanes between Springland/O'Callaghan Drive and Baring Boulevard — Howard Drive is also closed with a detour provided on Fargo Way.  KTVN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Flu and RSV cases are rising as Washoe County records its first flu death this season among an unvaccinated older man and 79 hospitalizations in one week. Health officials will offer free flu and COVID-19 shots tomorrow from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at NNPH’s clinic in Reno.  News4
  • On Jan. 5, Renown said it supported its pediatricians recommending vaccines under new guidelines, reinforcing its commitment to pediatric care.  KTVN
  • All Reno Radio is hosting a blood drive on Tuesday and Wednesday to help save lives. Community members are invited to donate blood and support local health efforts.  KTVN
  • Northern Nevada Public Health announced on Jan. 5 a free vaccine clinic for local residents in Sparks — the clinic will soon offer immunizations to boost community health.  KTVN
  • Local health officials reported a recent surge in flu-like illnesses in Washoe County, including one flu death, with more ER visits noted. Northern Nevada Public Health will host a free flu+COVID-19 vaccine clinic Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 1001 E. 9th Street, Building B in Reno.  KTVN
